Ladies 1s contensted round 2 of the Jacqui Potter Cup on Saturday. They faced a strong Old Alex side which featured two of the Olympic squad. Going into this game the girls knew it was going to be a challenge from the first whistle. Missing six first team players meant the girls had to adapt to new playing positions and welcomed the addition of six 2s players who really stepped up to the mark. The game started well with Naas putting pressure on immediately insinuating the first goal scoring opportunity. Michelle Cashman received a pass from midfield in the circle but was denied the opening goal through exceptional goal keeping skills from the Old Alex goalkeeper. Old Alex then upped the pressure and were rewarded with the first goal of the game just on the stroke of quarter time. In quarter 2, Old Alex hit another gear and put 4 past the Naas defense in quick succession. Naas girls regrouped at half time and turned the pressure around with some beautiful attacks from midfield and were unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal. In quarter 4 Naas kept the pressure on and were rewarded with a short corner that narrowly missed the goal. Old Alex got one final goal on the stroke of time to finish the game 6-0 Old Alex 1s. The girls put up a great fight throughout the game and the score definitely does not reflect the work ethic the girls put it. They will now compete in the Jacqui Potter shield in the upcoming weeks.
